Japan April 2012 - Day 9 Ueno Park / Akihabara

We woke up early again today hoping to get a headstart on the crowd going to Ueno Park for the Sakura viewing. I heard the park has millions of visitors a year, the bulk of which come during Sakura season. The 8000+ Sakura trees in the park probably have something to do with that =D.

Lanterns strung along the trees

Well, the Japanese are early-wakers as well as we found out. Quite a few tourists too. Quite a crowd here, impossible to take photos without a random stranger appearing in the photo, kinda like Kiyomizu at Kyoto. But the trees here are bigger and had brighter colours than any we're seen so far. You will get peace of mind as you walk along the path. It's all very serene and peaceful even with the crowd. It helps that there's no pushing or shouting unlike Chinatown in Singapore during CNY.

Ueno Park has shrines and museums. The Ueno Zoo is also just next to the park. Pity about it being closed while we were there though. The Buddhist Shrine sells some fortune cat lucky charms, though i'm not superstitious, it makes a great souvenir.

You can spend a whole day at Ueno. The so called Ameyayokocho Black Market sells almost anything from food to clothing. There are some famous restaurants there too. We went in search of a famous Unagi restaurant.

Noboritei

Normal set

Well, this is it. Noboritei in Ueno. I'm actually not a fan coz there's a lot of bones in the eel. I don't like the texture of eel meat as well. The sauce's good though.

As evening approached we went to Akihabara to look around and visit the Gundam Cafe. Turned out to be a let down as the duty free malls there were very ordinary. Tons of arcardes and maid cafes but that wasn;t very interesting. The Gundam Cafe's menu wasn't special either although the interior design was all Gundam. We ended up having dinner at Shinjuku, a Western-Japanese restaurant reminiscent of Ma Maison.

Japan April 2012 - Day 8 Roppongi / Tokyo Tower / Shibuya

Tokyo at last! We will be spending the rest of the trip in Tokyo to check out the Sakura spots and checking out gourmet food.

First glimpse of Sakura

Tokyo Tower

Hanami

Our first glimpse of Sakura was at Roponggi at a small park near where we had breakfast. I think we got a little too excited as we spent probably more than an hour taking photos of the 4-5 trees that were there. We went to the Tokyo Tower after that and there were many more trees and people around. Blue sheets were laid on the ground to book the space for Hanami (Sakura viewing)

Hachiko

Ramen bar

After Tokyo Tower we went to Shibuya where the Hachiko statue was having some kind of ceremony. From what we could tell it was some kind of 100 year old anniversary? Lunch was at a ramen bar in Shibuya. It was at a basement level and very cramped but had a long queue so like all good Singaporeans we went and queued. We ordered the standard ramen and an egg. The egg was interesting as we had to peel it ourselves. The soup was flavorful and noodles springy but by tokyo standards it was normal.

Fujiya Dessert Cafe

The mascot - Peko-Chan

Strawberry shortcake

Banana pancakes

While strolling around and checking out the branded labels in Shibuya, we chanced upon Fujiya - a dessert cafe established in 1910. Peko-Chan is the mascot and many of the souvenirs sold in the store are based on her. The strawberry shortcake was soft and fluffy but we agreed that the one we had at the Kawaguchiko Music Forest was better. The banana pancakes was great, not dry and starchy.

Back at Ikebukuro for dinner. We actually passed by this BBQ seafood restaurant last night but we were too full of food. So, here we are today to try it out. The restaurant was very noisy and boisterous, the staff young, very friendly and full of greetings, more so than normal Japanese restaurants. The BBQ is DIY in the center of the table and everyone was just chatting and drinking biru while slowly cooking the food. Very good place to hangout with your friends even though the food was ordinary.

Japan April 2012 - Day 7 Kawaguchiko / Ikebukuro

Another early wake up call today. Our plan is to visit the surrounding tourist attractions and the Kawaguchiko 5th Station of Mt Fuji.

Huge music box cum doll house

The attraction that attracted us most was the Kawaguchiko Music Forest. It is said to be beautiful during Sakura season, too bad we were slightly too early for that. The Mt Kachi Kachi Ropeway was also interesting but again, was better viewed during Sakura season.

The Music Forest was still full of interesting Victorian style buildings and was essentially a music box museum. There was a performance hall and a giant music box cum doll house where the dolls will move when the music is activated.

Strawberry Shortcake

While we were walking around the Music Forest, we were seduced by the pictures of the desserts on offer by the Cafe. Everything was delicious, the fresh, sweet strawberries helped. The cake was very light and fluffy.

Located in the Music Forest is a museum with many antique music boxes. They also sell many kinds of music boxes, including some costing a few thousand Singapore dollars!

Snowing like mad!

Road to fifth station closed!

Our next stop is at the Kawaguchiko fifth station but we were informed by the bus driver that due to bad weather, our last stop would have to be at the fourth station. Bet the rest station owner didn't have as many guests before!. We had a quick snack, bought some Japanese Yong Tau Foo and headed back as our bus was the last bus down. Even the rest station owner closed shop.

Hoto Noodles

Our lunch today is Hoto Noodles, the dish consists of thick wheat noodles served in an iron pot. It resembles extra thick udon noodles. The soup is a miso based broth with pumpkin and other seasonal vegetables added. There is no meat. This is a dish local to Yamanashi Prefecture.

It took the whole afternoon to travel to Shinjuku from Kawaguchiko station. The best way is by coach. Train rides will need a transfer and the luggage would be a problem.

We stayed at Sakura Hotel Ikebukuro which cost us about $130 SGD. Its about 8 walk from one of the Ikebukuro station exits. The entrance is in an alley but it's well lit and there's a 24 hour cafe at the first floor.

The hotel rooms were as small as Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku but not near as nice. The hotel lobby was cramped and only had one lift, it was more like a backpacker's hotel. The toilet bowl's seat warmer and bidet function was disabled and the hot water wasn't sufficient to supply both the shower and the sink. That is, if someone's taking a bath, only wash your hands if u hate them!

I would not recommend anyone to stay nor stay here again another time.

Our dinner was at a Korean BBQ restaurant near the hotel. Don't ask me why we had korean food in Japan! And the food was ordinary too -_-! However, it was much cheaper than if one was to have the same food in Singapore. Either the reports of Tokyo being an expensive city were exaggerated or Singapore has become very expensive.

On hindsight, Tokyo may be expensive but at least their pay is high. Singapore is expensive yet our pay is low. Sighz.. And of course only a certain elite class of Singaporeans have salaries rising as fast as our hyper inflation.
